Student Loans Debt Driving Marijuana Use, Analysts Say
Student Loans Debt Driving Marijuana Use, Analysts Say The onerous cost of higher education has been blamed for many things â" and now, it may be responsible for driving up marijuana use in unexpected ways. In 2016, the average student lender left college with a massive $35,000 cost already on their books â" about three times what their parents had to worry about when leaving university about two decades ago. Thatâs raised alarm bells for policy makers, who say it has a lasting effect not only on the rest of the studentâs lives â" but also the larger economy. In 2015, for instance, the Federal Reserve found higher student loans led to fewer home owners. Graduates hoping to pay back those loans are also likely to spend less in general â" which, in turn, can lead to a slower economic growth. But a team of analysts at investment firm Cowen had another thought: Perhaps itâs driving younger Americans to go for marijuana because it gives a stronger high than alcohol. âThis shift towards higher student loan debt levels disproportionately affect millennials who are likely more price sensitive,â wrote a team of Cowen analysts led by Vivien Azer in a Thursday note. âSupporting our contention that âBuzz for Your Buckâ considerations are driving substitution among this younger cohort.â The team noted that over the past seven years, cannabis usage among those between 18-25 has risen 4.6% in the U.S., while alcohol consumption has fallen 2.5%. Demand for the two items have appeared to move inversely over the past few decades, according to the firm. Meanwhile, student debt as a proportion of overall household debt has grown to 36% â" higher than credit card debt and auto loans. Ironically, students convicted of marijuana possession become ineligible for federal student loans.

3 Invaluable Lessons I Learned When I Took a Break From My Career
3 Invaluable Lessons I Learned When I Took a Break From My Career As a working professional, there are times in life when you are forced to take a break from working. The reasons vary from taking a medical leave, having a baby, caring for a sick family member, or getting laid off from a job and elend finding work right away. At other times, we may decide to take a break from our careers. For me, there welches a time when I was gaining momentum in a job. But even though I was working toward a bigger salary and higher status, I felt the pull to find meaningful work. I wanted to transition from advertising sales to the field of leadership and organization development. This feeling led me to quit my job and take a break from working. During the nine-month break, I went back to school so I could learn about the new field I was embarking on. Even though I depleted my savings during my break, I gained much more in return. Here are three invaluable lessons I learned when I took a break from my career1. I learned how to deal with ambiguity. When I stepped away from my office job, I no longer had a structured, 9-5 routine. The ambiguous state forced me to adapt. While my end goal was to find a career aligned with my interests, I learned how not to think too far ahead and be comfortable in the state of flux. Once I built the capacity to accept ambiguity, I drew upon that particular muscle in many professional situations. Todays work environment requires many instances where answers are often unclear, and situations are muddled. The complex organizational structures we live in needs us to be flexible more often than not. Work priorities shift on a monthly, and sometimes weekly basis. Instead of holding back your efforts because you dont know how the situation will turn out, being able to produce during times of uncertainty makes you a valuable contributor.2. I learned the discipline of learning.During my break, I became a learner. I immersed myself in the field of leadership and organization development. I read as much as I could about the area. I connected with people who were in the industry. I researched jobs of interest, so if an opportunity came up, I would be ready for it. I believe that no matter how long we have been in a job, there is always something new to learn. At one of my previous employers, Microsoft, Satya Nadella, encouraged everyone at all levels to think like an intern. By that he meant, show up at work with the same curiosity and energy that a newly minted intern would likely possess. External factors such as politics, technology, economy, consumer tastes, all in the impact the companies we work in and the work we need to deliver. If you are always learning and keeping yourself up-to-date on trends impacting your field, you will elevate your value to your company, and in turn, enhance your marketability.3. I explored hobbies. This was a surprising one for me. I did not know at the time but later discovered the benefits of learning a hobby unrelated to my field. I took lessons in Swing Dancing. Health benefits aside, dancing took me out of my intellectual space and into a physical space. On most days, I worked in front of a screen surrounded by textbooks. But a few nights a week, I entered a different kind of environment one where my mind was detached and I focused on being carried away by the music of the early jazz era. Even today, I have hobbies unrelated to my career and the act of unplugging from my work helps me to be more effective. Discovering new activities helps alleviate stress and avoid workplace burnout.Peoples needs are different, and some of these lessons may not apply to you. Stepping away from your career might sound scary. But the point is, if you have the means and are considering this option, think about all of the ways youcould use your time away from work. You might be better off later because you took a break now.Yon Na is a leadership and organization development professional with 20 year s of corporate experience. Mums returning to work
Mums returning to work How Find A Job As A Return To Work MumPosted May 7, 2013, by Jo Messer If youre a mum wanting to get back into the workforce after taking time out to care for your kids, it can be hard to know where to start. But if youre methodical and determined and have a game plan, theres nothing to stop you. Here are some tips to get you on your way. Arm yourself with the necessary skills The first thing you need to do is scour the job sites and identify which jobs youd like to apply for. Review the position descriptions thoroughly to see if you have the required skills. If you find that you have skill gaps or your knowledge is outdated, you may need to consider doing some online courses to get yourself back up to speed. There is a range of short courses you can do and many computer/software courses available through TAFEs and online providers. The Australian government has an initiative currently in distributions-mix called the Mothers Returning to Work Grant. This prov ides financial assistance for training courses and programs that will enable you to hone your skills and get back into the workforce. Another useful resource is Women at Work International, which runs the Re-entry to Work Association. They produce a Return to Work Workbook, which they will mail out to anyone no matter where you are in Australia. If you are registered with Centrelink, make sure you let them know you want to return to work as they can link you in with a Job Service Provider that runs courses on re-entering the workforce. Emphasise your transferable skills According to a recent survey conducted by The Heat Group, 69.1 per cent of Aussie mums believe the skills theyve developed as mothers make them more employable and better at their jobs skills such as multi-tasking, people management, collaboration and delegation. Gillian Franklin, Managing Director of The Heat Group, says, Mums are the ultimate multi-taskers ... This high degree of multi-tasking has made them capabl e of churning through work tasks more efficiently. Having to corral often uncooperative children and manage the household also makes them effective people managers, decision-makers and organisers. Mums often have to run their households with military-like precision. Having dinner on the table at specific times, running to schedule with sports pick-ups and ensuring the laundry is done so that the family has clean clothes. Women have to pre-empt situations and plan their family lives, even to the minutest detail ... This augurs extremely well for women in the workplace, particularly when strategy and planning is an integral part of their workday, says Franklin. Stay in touch professionally There are a number of things you can do while youre out of the workforce, in anticipation of eventually returning to work. Maintaining your professional memberships is one such thing and is a great way to show future employers that you have remained in touch. Its easy to stay abreast of industry bes t practice via webinars that you can participate in from home. Even better are those that are recorded, that you can watch in your own time when the children are asleep. Keep a record of all relevant professional development activities you undertake during your time out of the paid workforce so you can include them on your resume. Read relevant industry publications, which you can often find online or at the local library. Also set up and maintain your LinkedIn profile so you can follow relevant industry groups, connect with past colleagues and potential employers, and generally stay up-to-date with your industry. Volunteer work Volunteering is a great way to refresh your skills and develop new ones, and can serve as a useful stepping stone. Most importantly, volunteering helps you to gain confidence something that might be lacking after time out from the workforce. Think about all the volunteer activities you have already done, for example being involved with parents association s, organising school/kinder events, charity involvement, play groups, sports coaching, and so on. What role did you have and what skills did you demonstrate? For example, if you were the Treasurer of a committee, you could talk about your responsibilities such as funds management, budget forecasting and financial planning. When seeking new volunteer roles, choose something that will assist you to further develop your skills and provide you with a tangible benefit. See my column on how to seek volunteer work.
