As many as five selected finalists will be invited to present their papers at a special session to be held at the ASME 2015 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) from Nov. 13 to 19 in Houston, Texas, where final judging and selection will take place. The competition is open to undergraduate students, baccalaureate engineers who graduated after April 2014, and graduate students who began their studies after April 2014. The author of the paper selected as the first-prize winner at the IMECE will be awarded $500, while the authors of the second- and third-place papers will receive $300 and $200, respectively. Authors should submit an abstract of 500 words or fewer describing their research papers, which should focus on a fluids engineering topic and may be the result of a project completed either at a university or in industry. Based on the abstract, contestants will be invited to submit full-length papers, which will be formally reviewed by the FED Young Engineer Paper Contest Committee, according to criteria including technical merit, paper quality, and adherence to YEP Contest entry requirements. Based on the recommendations of the reviewing committee, selected finalists will have an opportunity to revise their papers prior to final submission. But according to a Tuesday report from the Wall Street Journal, Facebook itself is facing allegations that the work of female engineers isn’t getting a fair shake at the company.Analyzing five years of Facebook’s open code-review data, an unnamed female engineer found that female engineers got their code rejected 35% more than their male peers.According to a screenshot of her internal post that the Journal obtained, she said she did this “so that we can have an insight into how the review process impacts people in various groups.”Checking performance, or undermining work?At Facebook, code needs to be reviewed by peers before it gets accepted. Women appear to wait longer and get inspected more closely.In this engineer’s report, she said that women had to wait 3.9% longer than men to get their code accepted and faced 8. 2% more questions about their code than their male counterparts.This engineer’s post was made in September and she has since moved on from Facebook, but her analysis sparked internal debates among Facebook employees.Facebook followed up with the engineer’s conclusion by conducting their own analysis. While the female engineer looked at an engineer’s tenure at Facebook, the official analysis looked at an engineer’s rank.A question of rank for women engineersThis led Facebook’s head of infrastructure, Jay Parikh, to dispute gender being the main factor to code rejection. Although Parikh acknowledged that the gender review gap was “still observable and felt by many of you,” Parikh said an engineer’s rank was the main factor for the rejection rates. Some employees interpreted this to mean that the real gender gap problem was a pipeline issue.There’s criticism for the methodology of both studies. The female engineer didn’t look at the previous jobs engineers might hav e held, while Facebook did not analyze the trend closely enough to rule out gender bias as a factor.But it’s clear that the engineer’s conclusion of women facing more scrutiny than men  resonated with many engineers.Her analysis was brought up to CEO Mark Zuckerberg in an employee town hall. When asked about it, Zuckerberg acknowledged  that gender bias was “an issue.”But it’s unclear if he means it’s a Facebook issue, or a general issue that affects the entire tech industry.Diverse teams make better decisionsFacebook has been called out for its lack of diversity before. Its Equal Employment Opportunity Filing for 2013 reported  that there were no black people in executive or senior management roles.In its latest diversity report, women represented 17% of technical roles. This matters because engineers at Facebook build the infrastructure that all of the features we the public see are built upon. Whatever life stories, biases, and perspectives they hold are embedded into the mainframe of the technology we use.As Sandberg herself has said about diversity: “Endless data show that diverse teams make better decisions. We are building products that people with very diverse backgrounds use, and I think we all want our company makeup to reflect the makeup of the people who use our products. That’s not true of any industry really, and we have a long way to go.”

Some of the technologies that will disrupt accounting include the following: Robotic process automation (RPA) - If you’ve ever written a macro in Excel, then you understand the basis of RPA, which focuses on automating repetitive tasks. Natural language processing (NLP) - NLP focuses on bridging the communication gap between humans and machines. Machine learning (ML) - ML, a close cousin to AI, allows software to edit itself so it keeps improving without human intervention. The software does this by analyzing vast quantities of data, identifying patterns and using these insights to improve future performance. ML is a potent way for machines to learn and adapt over time. SEARCH ACCOUNTING JOBS How will automation impact accounting? On the road from manual work to full automation, there will be a few intermediate stages. To use a past example, take banking reconciliation. Previously, reconciliation had to be completed manually, but then tools were created that allowed data to be imported from your firm’s bank and enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, reducing the manual work necessary. Many of these tools still require some human intervention, such as when there’s a data conflict. However, they are improving, and reconciliations are now completely automated in some offices. As accounting automation continues to take over some of the individual duties traditionally the province of finance professionals, here are some of the tasks it is likely to affect: Routine tasks - Number-crunching is the most obvious candidate for automation. Any job that involves following an algorithm - calculating depreciation, for example - can be automated using existing RPA tools. Compliance - While accountants will still need an excellent understanding of compliance, most key controls can be automated. ML can help improve the efficacy of automated key controls, ensuring there are no costly compliance breaches. Customer interaction - The human touch can’t be automated, but NLP can help. NLP allows for the computerization of some customer interactions, from chatbots to contract and document preparation. Strategy - Strategic thinking requires both analysis, where AI excels, and creativity, which is almost exclusively human. Further down the line, this might be an area dominated by what is referred to as “symbiotic computing.” Symbiotic computing is the process of people and AI working together as partners to create the best possible results. What can you do to keep your career moving forward? It’s unlikely software or robotic finance professionals will completely replace humans any time soon. However, accountants who want to future-proof their careers will increasingly need to work with automated tools to deliver the best possible service. The following skills can help you thrive in a world of increasing accounting automation: Data analytics - The ability to work with large datasets is becoming a vital skill in all sectors. This requires a knowledge of common reporting tools and experience with cloud-based ERPs. Creativity and strategic thinking - Automation has a tendency to over-standardize matters, which is problematic. Clients will still want to work with finance professionals who can anticipate unique opportunities and plan for all eventualities. Emotional intelligence - This is paramount to any individual’s success in the accounting profession. You need to build rapport with clients, earn their trust and pick up on the nuances of what they’re telling you. Or Disappointed. The rest of those d ays I know the answer.This doubt goes through my head…a lot. Some weeks it barely crosses my mind. Other weeks it’s all that’s there. Great things can be happening, and it’s still there. Sh*tty things can be happening, and it’s definitely there.The point is, doubt is real. And no amount of proving it to yourself, or proving it to others, or achieving, or external success, or manifesting is going to make the doubt disappear.We think it will. We think that when we have finally accomplished  (fill in the blank), or when we finally have (fill in the blank), or when we’ve finally reached (fill in the blank)…that we’ll be bigger than our doubt. That we’ll finally be the person that we want to be. That the voices will go away.I’m here to tell you, unfortunately, they will not. Doubt is always going to be there. The mind is always going to be running. And no amount of anything will make it go away. What’s really a bummer about that…is that  today, what you’re up to  right now, experience of this moment…it will never be enough. But you (and me)â€" we really, seriously, need to let today be enough.Doubt becomes less powerful when we’re able to step back into the present moment. When we pay attention to  today  and find something wonderful, something we can appreciate, doubt doesn’t have as much power. It becomes a thought instead of the truth. The tech industry's favorite visa program pushed down engineers' salaries The tech industry's favorite visa program pushed down engineers' salaries The H-1B visa program has played a historic role in shaping who has access to specialized jobs- specifically, by  temporarily hiring  foreign employees at  American  companies that sponsor them.But the program has also pushed down salaries for computer scientists, according to new research.A February 2017 working paper included in the April 2017 version of The NBER Digest found that, based on the researchers’ model using data from 1994 to 2001,  Ã¢€œin the absence of immigration, wages for US computer scientists would have been 2.6% to 5.1% higher and employment in computer science for US workers would have been 6.1% to 10.8% higher in 2001.”The program changed the landscape of the American job market- many  of the effects are still being felt today.The H-1B visa created lower salariesThe number of people from other countries joining the “US high-skill workforce” increased quickly during the “Internet boom of the 1990s,”  according to the working paper.The document said that the amount of H-1B visas awarded every year by the federal government is “capped,” but that even though there was a big uptick in how many were given out to “high-skill workers” in the 1990s, people in “computer-related occupations” became “the largest share of all H-1B visa holders,”  according to the U.S. General Accounting Office in 2000.Steve Maas wrote about the the working paper in the April 2017 version of The NBER Digest.“…some U.S. workers switched to other occupations, lowering the number of domestic computer scientists by between 6 and 11 percent,” Maas wrote.He also pointed out that the researchers think that if immigration was more restricted during this time period, salaries, “domestic employment, and, as a result, college enrollment in computer science would have grown even more rapidly than it did.”Positive impacts from the H-1BBut while the H-1B, a “non-immigrant visa,” disrupted  the climate of the computer science field, it also created positive, lasting change: while those tech and engineering jobs paid less, there were more of them.Maas wrote that “lower labor costs” led to higher profits, so new businesses were able to sprout up in the computer science industry, and other advances led to “expansion in related fields,  raising wages for college graduates who were not computer scientists and for non-college graduates.The researchers also made the case that slightly lower salaries for workers under H-1B visas allowed technology companies to create lower-cost gadgets for consumers at a higher profit to the company.Big changes to today’s H-1B visaThe visa of choice for the tech industry is very likely to change under President Donald Trump.The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, or USCIS, introduced  new regulations announced at the end of March, that changed how the government distributes H-1B visas to immigrants in computer programming- businesses now have to “prove” that potential candi dates “are doing special, complex jobs requiring unique technical expertise,”  as reported by Recode.USCIS  announced  yesterday that it is taking further steps to find and prevent “H-1B visa fraud and abuse” among employers.“The H-1B visa program should help U.S. companies recruit highly-skilled foreign nationals when there is a shortage of qualified workers in the country. Yet, too many American workers who are as qualified, willing, and deserving to work in these fields have been ignored or unfairly disadvantaged,” the news release said.The department will  reportedly prioritize these factors and occasions to stamp out criminal behavior during visits to “H-1B petitioners” and workspaces employing H-1B visa holders.The news release  said that the policy changes are  Ã¢€œnot meant to target nonimmigrant employees for any kind of criminal or administrative action,” but rather, to find employers who are violating the program.Google  reportedly weighed in on what yest erday’s policy means for its employees, according to an email secured by Recode.“Wanted to quickly weigh in on behalf of the immigration team to let you all know that we’re following this and for now, don’t anticipate an impact to Googlers,” the email reportedly says. “Our software engineering roles don’t fall into the job categories included in the USCIS’s [United States Citizenship and Immigration Services] new guidance. We’ll continue to watch the H-1B visa space closely and keep Googlers updated on any changes they need to be aware of.”The influx of specially-trained immigrants through the H-1B visa program has had a lasting impact on the American labor market for decades, but its influence may be waning.
