Kick-start your brilliant career with a business degree
Kick-start your brilliant career with a geschftsleben degree Kick-start your brilliant career with a geschftliches miteinander degreePosted October 13, 2011, by Josie ChunFor anyone aspiring to a career in management, wishing to climb the corporate ladder or dreaming about running their own business, a business qualification is one of the best places to start. So where can business degrees take you, and which kind of business degree is most appropriate for you? Here are some things you need to consider when choosing between courses. The foundation for a successful careerArmed with a business degree, you can take your qualification anywhere and go into almost any area of business the world is your oyster.Business is a broad area of study and business skills are being applied in increasingly diverse settings such as not-for-profit, government, health, corporate organisations and even academia, says Michael Crock, General Manager, Academic Products and Services, Open Universities Austra lia (OUA).And once you get your foot in the door, youll have a competitive edge in the workplace. A business degree can give students a competitive advantage within business compared to those who dont have one. Gaining a business qualification enables students to develop not only entrepreneurial skills but also capabilities in specific professional areas, so they can operate effectively in work and community situations with the ability to adapt and manage change in their future career, says Crock. Freelance accountant Irene Giorgiannis opportunities blossomed after she graduated from business at UTS. I would definitely recommend studying business, especially if you are still unsure of what profession you want to practise. A Bachelor of Business is not just numbers I got a taste of subjects like marketing, law and statistics as well. Big companies respect the degree and if you chose to run your own small home-based business it would assist you in that too, says Giorgianni. Profe ssor Robert Brooks, Associate Dean, Undergraduate, Faculty of Business and Economics at Monash University, agrees that business degrees are remarkably versatile. They provide students with essential strategy skills and a broad knowledge of disciplines that provide a framework for problem-solving in any industry.Generalist or specialist? If youre looking for maximum flexibility and the widest range of options, then a more general qualification is the way to go. General degrees titelblatt a broad base of foundational subjects in core business disciplines (such as economics, marketing, management), with a choice of majors which students can choose later in the program. This gives you time to find your area of interest and aptitude. Starting off with a general Bachelor of Business worked well for Irene Giorgianni. I still wasnt sure what type of work I wanted to do or what industry I wanted to be involved in. Doing a general business degree gave me more options as it would eventually a llow me to enter any industry I chose. The general business degree gave me a taste of different areas which subsequently helped me to decide. Giorgianni eventually decided on a double major in finance and accounting. If you know from the outset what industry you want to target, for example accounting or business information systems, financial planning or logistics, then a more specialised business degree can work better for you. It will provide the basic business foundations, as well as specialised knowledge for your industry. Giorgianni is happy with her specialisations in finance and accounting. I couldnt decide between finance and accounting, which were the two areas I was doing really well in. I found a level of comfort with accounting and job-wise it would provide stability as all businesses, whether large or small, public or private, need accountants but I found finance more interesting and so I did both.Choose your levelWhether you choose to study a bachelors, masters, d iploma or certificate will depend on your

7 Work World
7 Work WorldIn Defense of Summer Fridays in a 24/7 Work WorldShare the love this summer by incorporating one of the hottest incentives into your business plan.I like to believe Im as hard-working as the next guy or girl. Being full time at WeWork, deputy editor of OhThePeopleYouMeet.com and holding a Travel+SocialGood board position is no cakewalk. Honestly, its a lot to juggle most days. But theres something about the summer that Ill always hold near and dear. Its not just the tropical drinks and endless sunshine that attract us to summer, but the work incentives that coincide with the thermisch season. By the end of the week, Im ready for a Summer Friday. And I will always be a proponent- not just because I grew up five steps away from the beach, but for what it adds to a companys morale.Summer Fridays come in different forms at different companies. Ive personally had half days offered throughout the summer and full days to use at my convenience between Memorial Day and Labor Day. R egardless of the execution, Summer Fridays should be on your companys calendar for two simple reasonsWere 24/7 anywaySigning off completely isnt realistic Saturday and Sunday, so why would it be on Friday? Just because were not in the office doesnt mean were unreachable. Actually its quite the opposite, with the unspoken understanding that emails will be checked, phone calls answered and text messages responded to regardless of the day of the week. So why not allow your employees to hit the beach early on Fridays if theyve completed their work for the week? Its a small gesture of appreciation with a big returnCompanies that offer little perks- like dinner on late Monday nights or free beer in the kitchen (both of which I enjoy at WeWork )- have happier employees. Were motivated to put in the extra hours and effort when we work in a positive environment. Letting your team leave early on Fridays goes a long way in making your employees feel appreciated.Incorporating Summer Fridays in to your business model will have your employees feeling their best on Monday morning. The better your employees feel, the better they will perform. Extra serotonin is good for everybody from interns to CEOs. Just dont forget to add sunscreen

Facebook engineer says companys female engineers have code rejected more than men
Facebook engineer says company's female engineers have code rejected more than men Facebook engineer says company's female engineers have code rejected more than men When Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg wrote âLean In,â it launched a national movement around womenâs leadership and what it takes to break glass ceilings. But according to a Tuesday report from the Wall Street Journal, Facebook itself is facing allegations that the work of female engineers isnât getting a fair shake at the company.Analyzing five years of Facebookâs open code-review data, an unnamed female engineer found that female engineers got their code rejected 35% more than their male peers.According to a screenshot of her internal post that the Journal obtained, she said she did this âso that we can have an insight into how the review process impacts people in various groups.âChecking performance, or undermining work?At Facebook, code needs to be reviewed by peers before it gets accepted. Women appear to wait longer and get inspected more closely. In this engineerâs report, she said that women had to wait 3.9% longer than men to get their code accepted and faced 8. 2% more questions about their code than their male counterparts. This engineerâs post was made in September and she has since moved on from Facebook, but her analysis sparked internal debates among Facebook employees.Facebook followed up with the engineerâs conclusion by conducting their own analysis. While the female engineer looked at an engineerâs tenure at Facebook, the official analysis looked at an engineerâs rank.A question of rank for women engineersThis led Facebookâs head of infrastructure, Jay Parikh, to dispute gender being the main factor to code rejection. Although Parikh acknowledged that the gender review gap was âstill observable and felt by many of you,â Parikh said an engineerâs rank was the main factor for the rejection rates. Some employees interpreted this to mean that the real gender gap problem was a pipeline issue.Thereâs criticism for the methodology of both studies. The female engineer didnât look at the previous jobs engineers might hav e held, while Facebook did not analyze the trend closely enough to rule out gender bias as a factor. But itâs clear that the engineerâs conclusion of women facing more scrutiny than men resonated with many engineers. Her analysis was brought up to CEO Mark Zuckerberg in an employee town hall. When asked about it, Zuckerberg acknowledged that gender bias was âan issue.âBut itâs unclear if he means itâs a Facebook issue, or a general issue that affects the entire tech industry.Diverse teams make better decisionsFacebook has been called out for its lack of diversity before. Its Equal Employment Opportunity Filing for 2013 reported that there were no black people in executive or senior management roles. In its latest diversity report, women represented 17% of technical roles. This matters because engineers at Facebook build the infrastructure that all of the features we the public see are built upon. Whatever life stories, biases, and perspectives they hold are embedded into the mainframe of the technology we use.As Sandberg herself has said about diversity: âEndless data show that diverse teams make better decisions. We are building products that people with very diverse backgrounds use, and I think we all want our company makeup to reflect the makeup of the people who use our products. Thatâs not true of any industry really, and we have a long way to go.â

7 Things You Need to Learn to Become a Successful Entrepreneur
7 Things You Need to Learn to Become a Successful Entrepreneur 7 Things You Need to Learn to Become a Successful Entrepreneur To stay at the top of their game, entrepreneurs need be diligent when it comes to self-improvement. As an entrepreneur myself, Iâve learned several tips and tricks at different points in my career to give me an edge over the competition. Below are seven of the most important. 1. When to break the rules Rules are made to be broken, and the best entrepreneurs are those who know the rules as well as when to break them. Sometimes itâs only by breaking the rules that you end up with new inventions and innovations. 2. When to quit and when to stick It doesnât take entrepreneurs long to develop a sort of sixth sense about when itâs time to stick with something and when itâs time to cut their losses. Itâs a delicate balance to find but getting it right will save you a lot time on lost causes and let you better prioritize your work. 3. How to live on a budget Entrepreneurial life isnât always easy, and sometimes money and resources will be tight. If you can get used to living on a budget in your early days, itâll hold you in good stead when times get tough. Itâll also teach you more about budgeting and finances. 4. How to find a mentor Many of the top entrepreneurs are only where they are today because they learned from yesterdayâs leaders. Having a mentor allows you to learn from their mistakes without having to repeat them. It also gives you access to new insights and knowledge that you might not previously have had access to. Plus, itâs always nice to know that someoneâs got your back. 5. How to read people Developing your communication skills and learning to read people will pay off in your personal life, as well as in your professional life. Remember that many entrepreneurs also find themselves acting as managers, and when youâre managing people, you need to have top-notch people skills and to lead by example. Otherwise, you wonât inspire them to reach their full potential. 6. How to make friends They say itâs not what you know, itâs who you know. Perhaps that saying is a bit cliché, but the message is true enough. Making friends with other entrepreneurs will help you feel like part of the overall community. It can also lead to business deals and referrals. One great way to get noticed and to be remembered is to help other people out without expecting anything in return. 7. How to acquire (and teach!) new skills Life is a series of lessons, and thereâs always something for you to learn if youâre willing to put in the time and effort. Keith Springs of ProEssayWriting says, âWeâve witnessed a big increase in employee retention and engagement ever since we started running optional lessons on everything from web development to pottery, cooking, and more.â If you start running lessons for employees, then you can take advantage of them yourself. Also, being the one who teaches the lessons forces you to know your subject matter inside and out. Becky Holton is a journalist and a blogger. What You Need to Know About Accounting Automation
What You Need to Know About Accounting Automation What You Need to Know About Accounting Automation Finance functions are increasing the use of accounting automation where it makes the most sense. The goal is to boost efficiencies and align with digital transformation initiatives, either in the accounting and finance functions themselves, in the broader business, or both. But this is just a start, as technology continues to advance. Accounting professionals at all levels need to be ready for whatever happens next. Hereâs more about how automation and other technologies are revolutionizing finance and accounting work, as well as what you can do to stay relevant if youâre an accounting employee or job seeker. Accounting automation trends Robert Halfâs new report, Jobs and AI Anxiety, explores how technologies like cloud computing, software robots and virtual reality are already transforming workplaces. The future will see many more automation applications that will have an effect on traditional finance jobs. Some of the technologies that will disrupt accounting include the following: Robotic process automation (RPA) - If youâve ever written a macro in Excel, then you understand the basis of RPA, which focuses on automating repetitive tasks. Modern RPA tools like Kofax and Blue Prism are extremely powerful and can be used to automate even the most complex processes. Natural language processing (NLP) - NLP focuses on bridging the communication gap between humans and machines. It turns documents and speech into structured data and enables computers to speak or write in a way that sounds natural. Artificial intelligence (AI) - Weâre a long way from developing AI that thinks like humans, as popularized in films such as â2001: A Space Odysseyâ and âThe Matrix.â Today, work in the field of AI focuses on copying human decision-making processes and executing jobs in human ways. For example, some financial firms use AI to assess risk or detect fraud. Machine learning (ML) - ML, a close cousin to AI, allows software to edit itself so it keeps improving without human intervention. The software does this by analyzing vast quantities of data, identifying patterns and using these insights to improve future performance. ML is a potent way for machines to learn and adapt over time. SEARCH ACCOUNTING JOBS How will automation impact accounting? On the road from manual work to full automation, there will be a few intermediate stages. To use a past example, take banking reconciliation. Previously, reconciliation had to be completed manually, but then tools were created that allowed data to be imported from your firmâs bank and enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, reducing the manual work necessary. Many of these tools still require some human intervention, such as when thereâs a data conflict. However, they are improving, and reconciliations are now completely automated in some offices. As accounting automation continues to take over some of the individual duties traditionally the province of finance professionals, here are some of the tasks it is likely to affect: Routine tasks - Number-crunching is the most obvious candidate for automation. Any job that involves following an algorithm - calculating depreciation, for example - can be automated using existing RPA tools. Compliance - While accountants will still need an excellent understanding of compliance, most key controls can be automated. ML can help improve the efficacy of automated key controls, ensuring there are no costly compliance breaches. Customer interaction - The human touch canât be automated, but NLP can help. NLP allows for the computerization of some customer interactions, from chatbots to contract and document preparation. Strategy - Strategic thinking requires both analysis, where AI excels, and creativity, which is almost exclusively human. Further down the line, this might be an area dominated by what is referred to as âsymbiotic computing.â Symbiotic computing is the process of people and AI working together as partners to create the best possible results. What can you do to keep your career moving forward? Itâs unlikely software or robotic finance professionals will completely replace humans any time soon. However, accountants who want to future-proof their careers will increasingly need to work with automated tools to deliver the best possible service. The following skills can help you thrive in a world of increasing accounting automation: Data analytics - The ability to work with large datasets is becoming a vital skill in all sectors. This requires a knowledge of common reporting tools and experience with cloud-based ERPs. Creativity and strategic thinking - Automation has a tendency to over-standardize matters, which is problematic. Clients will still want to work with finance professionals who can anticipate unique opportunities and plan for all eventualities. Emotional intelligence - This is paramount to any individualâs success in the accounting profession. You need to build rapport with clients, earn their trust and pick up on the nuances of what theyâre telling you. Existing AIs cannot provide clients with the same level of trust and empathy people can. Communication - Excellent writing and speaking abilities will always be valued by employers. They enhance customer services and are crucial for cross-departmental collaboration, especially during ongoing digital transformation projects. As long as you stay abreast of changes and keep your skills fresh, accounting automation probably isnât going to be a major threat to your career success. When you focus on how you can work with these innovations and use them to your firmâs advantage, you can actually advance your career. Learn more about how new technology will affect accounting jobs in our Jobs and AI Anxiety report.

The tech industrys favorite visa program pushed down engineers salaries
The tech industry's favorite visa program pushed down engineers' salaries The tech industry's favorite visa program pushed down engineers' salaries The H-1B visa program has played a historic role in shaping who has access to specialized jobs- specifically, by temporarily hiring foreign employees at American companies that sponsor them. But the program has also pushed down salaries for computer scientists, according to new research.A February 2017 working paper included in the April 2017 version of The NBER Digest found that, based on the researchersâ model using data from 1994 to 2001, âin the absence of immigration, wages for US computer scientists would have been 2.6% to 5.1% higher and employment in computer science for US workers would have been 6.1% to 10.8% higher in 2001.âThe program changed the landscape of the American job market- many of the effects are still being felt today. The H-1B visa created lower salariesThe number of people from other countries joining the âUS high-skill workforceâ increased quickly during the âInternet boom of the 1990s,â according to the working paper. The document said that the amount of H-1B visas awarded every year by the federal government is âcapped,â but that even though there was a big uptick in how many were given out to âhigh-skill workersâ in the 1990s, people in âcomputer-related occupationsâ became âthe largest share of all H-1B visa holders,â according to the U.S. General Accounting Office in 2000.Steve Maas wrote about the the working paper in the April 2017 version of The NBER Digest.ââ¦some U.S. workers switched to other occupations, lowering the number of domestic computer scientists by between 6 and 11 percent,â Maas wrote. He also pointed out that the researchers think that if immigration was more restricted during this time period, salaries, âdomestic employment, and, as a result, college enrollment in computer science would have grown even more rapidly than it did.âPositive impacts from the H-1BBut while the H-1B, a ânon-immigrant visa,â disrupted the climate of the computer science field, it also created positive, lasting change: while those tech and engineering jobs paid less, there were more of them.Maas wrote that âlower labor costsâ led to higher profits, so new businesses were able to sprout up in the computer science industry, and other advances led to âexpansion in related fields, raising wages for college graduates who were not computer scientists and for non-college graduates. The researchers also made the case that slightly lower salaries for workers under H-1B visas allowed technology companies to create lower-cost gadgets for consumers at a higher profit to the company.Big changes to todayâs H-1B visaThe visa of choice for the tech industry is very likely to change under President Donald Trump. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, or USCIS, introduced new regulations announced at the end of March, that changed how the government distributes H-1B visas to immigrants in computer programming- businesses now have to âproveâ that potential candi dates âare doing special, complex jobs requiring unique technical expertise,â as reported by Recode.USCIS announced yesterday that it is taking further steps to find and prevent âH-1B visa fraud and abuseâ among employers.âThe H-1B visa program should help U.S. companies recruit highly-skilled foreign nationals when there is a shortage of qualified workers in the country. Yet, too many American workers who are as qualified, willing, and deserving to work in these fields have been ignored or unfairly disadvantaged,â the news release said. The department will reportedly prioritize these factors and occasions to stamp out criminal behavior during visits to âH-1B petitionersâ and workspaces employing H-1B visa holders. The news release said that the policy changes are ânot meant to target nonimmigrant employees for any kind of criminal or administrative action,â but rather, to find employers who are violating the program.Google reportedly weighed in on what yest erdayâs policy means for its employees, according to an email secured by Recode.âWanted to quickly weigh in on behalf of the immigration team to let you all know that weâre following this and for now, donât anticipate an impact to Googlers,â the email reportedly says. âOur software engineering roles donât fall into the job categories included in the USCISâs [United States Citizenship and Immigration Services] new guidance.
